The hornpipe is one of the genuinely traditional instruments in the Catalan culture. The hornpipe groups have for centuries accompanied our cultural manifestations: for instance the forming of human castles (called "castells"), balls and dances.
When we speak of the hornpipers then "Les Pobles" is its reference because in the village two important hornpipe groups were born, "Els Martinencs" and "La Colla de les Pobles".
Some outstanding players of the instrument were Josep Esplugues Roig (1860-?), Magi Sendra Guëll (1910-?) or Joan Vives Marimon (1911-1989) and some players of the kettledrum were Florenci Ferré Galofre (186?-192?) or Pau Ferrer Vendrell (1911-1980). And of all these the most outstanding one was Ramon Alari Martí (1859-1945) who besides establishing the group "Els Martinencs" towards the year 1910 was also the one who kept alive the sound of the hornpipe in the village until the thirties of the XX century when he was the village priest and with the hornpipe sound he called the whole neighbourhood together (In the village his hornpipe of two keys is still to be seen).
To remember the past of the hornpipers of "Les Pobles" on the 10th.April 2005 a special act was celebrated in order to recover the sound of that instrument in the village. There was also a conference explaining details on the "grallers" of the village which conference was held by the builder of the instrument as well as the historian on the history of the hornpiper Xavier Orriols coming from the nearby village Vilanova I la Geltrú. There was also a concert performed by the group "Els Brillants" an established group of hornpipers and kettledrummers of the Traditional and Popular Music Association of the Cultural Department of the Catalan Government conducted by Roser Olivé.
She coordinates this Association and she is a hornpipe teacher. She also does research work on this "world of hornpipe" music. She teaches in several Catalan schools of traditional music which are nationally well renowned.
